A Note About Wedding Photography Prices

If you have ever wondered why wedding photography seems so expensive then please read on. As self employed professional photographers we have to pay for the following:

  • Our Equipment - most quality wedding photographers will use a minimum of two professional grade cameras each costing circa £2500-4000. These cameras need to be replaced every 2-3 years. They also carry several lenses, flash guns, strobe lighting, batteries and memory cards totalling around £3000-5000. Each of these items also have shelf lives and need to be replaced routinely.
  • Insurances - a professional photographer will have public liability, professional indemnity and equipment cover.
  • Tax and national insurance. Approximately 22% of our income is paid to HMRC.
  • Editing software - Adobe products like Photoshop and Lightroom must either be paid for or rented. 
  • Computer equipment - Professional photographers will almost certainly edit their own images thus ensuring you get the finished article that you have seen in their portfolio. The computers required to run this equipment will not be cheap and, like their photographic equipment, will have a shelf life and need replenishing. 
  • Professional Affiliation - like ourselves, most quality professional photographers will be affiliated to a professional body such as the SWPP or BIPP. For me, one of the main reasons for belonging to the SWPP is that if I am unable to attend a wedding due to an emergency, I have a list of other local photographers in the area I can contact who can attend in my place. Membership to these bodies can cost in the hundreds of pounds.
  • Time - speaking for myself, I typically spend between 6 and 8 days on your wedding. This breaks down to: 1 day before the wedding including consultation and research of the venue, 1 day to photograph the wedding and the 4-6 days to edit your photos. Your photos are edited individually by myself and I ensure that your photos are uniform in colour throughout the set. Once the photos are edited I take time to set them out in an online gallery to tell the story of your day for you and your partner to relive.
  • Travel - I do not ask for additional travel costs to get to your wedding or pre wedding consultation (except if your wedding is on one of the islands or abroad and there are ferry/plane costs involved).
  • Training - Many photographers, myself included, choose to go on training and knowledge sharing courses. The cost of these can be quite substantial depending on who is running it. By going to these courses, we ensure that we stay abreast of all the latest technologies, trends and techniques.

I hope this gives you some idea of the invisible costs when hiring a wedding photographer. If you come across a photographer offering very low rates then ask yourself why? Are they using professional equipment? Are they insured? How much time will they spend making the photos from the biggest day of your life perfect?
